NGC7293 Helix Nebula by ZeSly NGC7293 Helix Nebula by ZeSly
The Eye of God

The Helix Nebula is the nearest planetary nebula of the earth located between Aquarius and Capricornus. So its apparent size is quiet large but it is very faint. You need at least a 250mm diameter telescope to see it and a good dark sky to observe it. Another difficulty, it is an horizon hugger as seen from France.

There is small trace in left of the image, the asteroid 1047 Geisha where moving in the field while I was shooting.

41 exposures of 5 minutes done in two nights.
Camera : Canon EOS 1000D unfiltered
Telescope : Takahashi FSQ-106ED refractor.
Mount : Takahashi EM-200 USD3.
Guiding : Orion Starshoot Autoguider on a William Optic Zenithstar 66SD refractor.
Outside temperature : 10C
Sensor temperature : 13C
Software : auto-guiding and acquisition with MaximDL, pre-processing with Iris, processing with photoshop.
Location : L'Epine, Hautes-Alpes, France

Very nice work. It is starting to show the outer ring of nebulosity. Had to really look to find the asteroid, but it's there. Well done!

The outer ring was hard to reveal by processing.
The asteroid is not easy to see in this reduce image. I found it on the full-resolution image while looking for warm pixels.
Thank you for your compliment !

My pleasure! I think the next best amature image of this I have seen had about 10.5 hours on it.[link]

Cool! I recognized this photo from the iPhone app Starwalk! They have a tighter cropped version of this in their "photo of the day"
Almost looks like someone is watching us hey?
Awesome shot and must have been a great feeling to come away with this!

Thanks a lot ! I famous photo of this nebula has been made by Hubble [link] It has a smaller field of view than me :-D
Yes it's a great feeling to be in the wild nature all night long capturing this beauties. Some strange noise from wild animal are a bit scary sometimes but I like it.

Interesting and pretty. I would like to see it cropped a bit closer just because it is such a fascinating image.

Thank you ! :-) I like the wide field but I admit that it's a bit empty all around the nebula.
